Minister Nguyễn Quân met with IAEA’s Mission on Integrated Regulatory Review Service

On behalf of members of the IRRS Mission, Mr. John Kinneman –leader, senior expert, advisor of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, sent his sincere thanks to the Minister for creating favorableconditions for the Mission to work in Vietnam and carry out reviews of safety infrastructure in Stage 2 of Ninh ThanNuclear Power Plant project from September 28 to October 09, 2014.

Over the past days, the review group received active coordination from Vietnam’s relevant agencies, especially those from VARANS in providing information relating to the review contents.

The review group recognized VARANS’ remarkable efforts and success through the coordination with relevant Ministries and branches in order to strengthen regulatory infrastructure from 2009, specifically the formulation and issuance of Decrees, Decisions and Circulars, provision of supplementary resources… according to IAEA’s guidance. At this time, IRRS-2014 Mission finished the review contents and based on results of the trip, the Mission would reportto Vietnam’s Government on the current situation of the safety infrastructure and make relevant recommendations and proposals to the Government.

Minister Nguyễn Quân highly appreciated IRRS’ active and efficient cooperation and support for Vietnam to prepare and carry out the integrated regulatory review based on 20 factors of the safety infrastructure in Stage 2 of Ninh Than Nuclear Power Plant project. The Minister affirmed for the coming time, the Ministry of Science and Technologytogether with relevant Ministries and branches would make efforts to focus on overcoming Vietnam’s weakness and limitations in the formulation of safety infrastructure for the nuclear power development in order to meet IAEA’s requirements to which Vietnam has committed.

After the meeting with the Minister, on October 7, IRRS’ mission would meet Deputy Prime Minister Hoàng Trung Hải, who is in charge of Vietnam’s nuclear energy field to report him of working results of the mission and make important recommendations to be implemented for the coming time.
