From January 15-16, 2015, the delegation of European Commission (EC) came to work with Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS) on the implementation of Project VN 3.01/13, EC’s following project in order to improve VARANS’ capacities...
VARANS’ Director Vương Hữu Tấn chaired the working session with the delegation. Attending the working session were Deputy Director Lê Quang Hiệp, Deputy Director Cấn Văn Minh and leaders of tasks to be implemented in the Project.

Delivering a speech in the working session, Director Vương Hữu Tấn expressed his sincere thanks for EC’s support to VARANS over the past time and highly appreciated results achieved between the two sides in the Cooperation Project VN 3.01/09. Through activities within the Project’s framework, professional level of the Agency’s staff has been improved in fields of formulation of legal and regulatory documents, inspection, permit issuance, safety assessment, communication and advocacy, which contribute to improve nuclear safety management in Vietnam and support management activities to best comply with international standards and common practice.

The Director also emphasized that the fact that the Project is continued has had a very important meaning, especially within the context that VARANS has been faced with many difficulties in the timely development of necessary capacities and experience for the management of nuclear safety for the national nuclear power program.

In the working session, EC’s experts and the Agency’s officials discussed together to clear define the current status, demands and then propose specific activities to be supported in the 6 Project tasks: Formulating the legal and regulatory framework on nuclear safety in Vietnam; Establishing the quality management system for the management of nuclear units of the Agency; Building capacities for VARANS to carry out and/or start independent assessment and appraise safety documents; Working out the plan on human resource training and sustainable training programs for VARANS and Technical Supporting Organizations of the Agency, nuclear security and inspection, transparency and public information.
