The first Conference of Cooperation Coordination Group between Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology and US’s Department of Energy

On March 23, 2010, Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission (VAEC) organized the first Conference of Cooperation Coordination Group between Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), US...

The objectives of this Conference was to review activities implemented during 2 years (2008 - 2010) and propose the cooperation plan in the coming years. Accordingly, from 2008 up to now, Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission (VAEC), Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARNS) coordinated with NNSA to develop and implement technical assistance in terms of radiation safety and health physics; operation and usage of research reactor piles; radiation environmental monitoring; management and maintenance of radioactive wastes with low activity levels; development of national legal systems for nuclear electricity; implementation of the additional Protocol and development of the national accounting and control system. During the 2- year implementation, cooperation activities have achieved good results and opened new cooperation opportunities.

Specifically, each year the US side sent expert delegations from national laboratories and Universities such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, University of Texas at Austin,.. to come and organize many workshops in order to discuss relevant issues with VAEC and VARNS. At the same time, the US side also invited Vietnamese officials to attend conferences, workshops and training courses and sponsor some equipment for Vietnam.

This was one activity under the cooperation framework of Agreement on information exchange and cooperation on atomic energy usage for peaceful purposes between MOST and USDOE, which was signed on August, 2007. The first success from this activity has affirmed the Vietnam-US bilateral cooperation become better and better.
