Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES) and Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS) organized the Conference on Nuclear Safety on 5 March 2009 in Hanoi. Participating in the Seminar were experts from JNES, Japan Nuclear and Industry Safety Association (NISA), Japan Nuclear Technology Institute (JANTI), VARANS and other science organizations in Vietnam.
There were presentations of experts from Vietnam and Japan on nuclear safety issues such as the importance and development of safety for Nuclear power plans (NPP) currently.
Japanese experts shared their experiences on international cooperation, roles of regulatory bodies, construction of information infrastructure and public belief in nuclear safety regulations, etc. Other detailed subjects regarding warnings of tsunamis disasters to NPP and consideration of nuclear community in Vietnam were also presented at the conference. The two sides jointly discussed solutions on nuclear energy safety in Vietnam to improve knowledge of incident and accident control and put forward ideas to develop nuclear safety procedures more effectively.
These issues play important roles especially in the context of Vietnam preparation roadmap for constructing its first nuclear power plant in Phuoc Dinh Commune, Ninh Thuan Province with expectation of operating by the year 2020. Furthermore, it will be very useful for Vietnam to learn experiences from Japan – a country with long-standing history in developing nuclear power.
Through this event, Vietnamese experts could exchange and learn experiences on nuclear safety from Japanese experts. The Seminar opened further cooperation opportunities on nuclear safety between Vietnam and Japan in general as well as VARANS and JNES in specific
