On the 30 Dec. 2009 the Inter-ministerial Working Group on International Treaties related to nuclear energy (Working Group) was held at Headquarters of the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS).

Authorised by Vice Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Le Dinh Tien – Head of the Group, VARANS Director General (DG) Dr. Ngo Dang Nhan – Deputy Head - chaired the meeting. The meeting focused on reviewing the Group’s activities in 2009 and discussing the plan for 2010.

VARANS Deputy Director General Dr. Le Chi Dung, on behalf of the Standing unit of the Group, reported the work of the Group in 2009. During the last 4 months since the Working Group was established (Decision No.1648/QĐ-BKHCN on 18 August, 2009), the Nuclear Safety Convention was studied. The proposal for participation in Nuclear Safety Convention was developed to be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval. The concensus on the proposal was reached at the meeting. The convention and the proposal will be now submitted to relevant Ministries for review and consultation. Joining in the Convention on Nuclear Safety will provide an opportunity for Participating Parties to share information and exchange experience in the field of nuclear safety.

Regarding planning for activities in 2010, the Group agreed on the plan proposed by the Standing unit, in which the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and its Amendments, the International Convention on Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terorism will be studied to be proposed to the Government for participation. The Group was also briefed of the IAEA-EU Project on Nuclear Security.

Closing the meeting, VARANS DG Dr. Ngo Dang Nhan expressed his appreciation to the Group members’s contributions and efforts during the last year and stressed once again the need to participate in the international treaties related to nuclear energy, which is especially important in the context that our National Assembly approved the Ninhthuan Nuclear Power Project.
