Attending the Workshop were Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh, Doctor Tạ Doãn Trịnh – NISTPASS’s Director, Doctor Patrick J.Gilabert – UNIDO’s Representative in Vietnam, representatives from departments, institutes, functional agencies, members of the International Consulting Committee together with many scientists.

This workshop was organized within the framework of common activities of the Project on Policy Consultation on Science, Technology and Innovation Strategies for the 2011- 2020 period and the Implementation of the Law on High Technologies with objectives of improving capacities for Vietnam’s policy makers and interest groups to develop S&T policies and strategies suitable for the country’s social and economic targets.

Delivering the opening speech in the Workshop, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh affirmed this has been an important project for Vietnam’s S&T development. The Deputy Minister emphasized, in order to achieve objectives of becoming country which has middle-income level, fast and sustainable growth and basically become an industrial country by 2020, one of breakthrough solutions defined by the Government is that development of human resources with S&T development.

Through two main topics which are the role of Science, Technology and Innovation in Vietnam’s development process and opportunities, challenges from current social and economic trends, the Workshop was focused on discussing and deeply questioning about issues as the current situation of Vietnam’s STI; how elements of the STI framework are developed, where Vietnam has currently stood and which directions the 2011- 2020 policies would be developed …

Also in the Workshop, leading experts in policy consultation from countries as Austria, France, Denmark, South Korea, Finland, the UK, Bolivia exchanged knowledge and shared experience in the development of S&T strategies for Vietnam.
