Kovalevskaia Awards: Honoring Vietnamese scientists

On 28/01/2010 in Hanoi, Vietnam Kovalevskaia Awards Committee coordinated with Vietnam Women’s Union to organize “Wrap-up Conference on 25th Vietnam Kovalevskaia Awards”.

Attending the Conference were Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh- Ex Deputy President of Socialist Republic of Vietnam – Chairwoman of the Awards Committee; Ms. Hoang Thi Ai Nhien- Vice Chairwoman of Vietnam Women’s Union; Ms. Tran Thi Hong- Vice Director of Committee on Propaganda and Education, the standing part of the Awards Committee together with female scientists representing individuals and collectives which have ever presented with Kovalevskaia Awards.

Kovalevskaia Awards are noble awards in order to respect, affirm roles and roles of female scientists who have active contributions to the country’s S&T development. The awards are only presented once for a collective or individual in which the collective should have at least 70% of female scientists and the leader is a woman; individuals to be selected are Vietnamese women and are not members of awarded collectives; collectives or individuals who do scientific researchers have scientific works, achievements in fields of natural sciences (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicines, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Industry...).

Over the past 25 years, 15 collectives and 31 individuals of female scientists who are the best in fields of natural sciences and applied sciences have been selected and presented by Kovalevskaia Awards Committee. Some best female scientists and collectives are Professor Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, Professor, Doctor Pham Thi Tran Chau, Professor Ngo Thi Mai, Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Hoe, Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Tram, Women collective of the Veterinary Institute, Woman collective of the Department of Rice Breeding Genetics, Women collective of Thuy Phuong Center for Poultry Research … Among awarded individuals and collectives, there have been 10 professors, 17 Assistant Professors, 53 Doctors, 2 People’s doctors, 8 People’s Teachers, 5 Outstanding teachers, 5 Outstanding doctors. Some women have been awarded with Labor Medal of I, II, III level by the State, with Certificates of Merits by the Prime Minister, Certificates of Innovative Labor and Certificates of Merits by Ministries and branches.

Delivering a speech in the Conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh has said over the past 25 years, Vietnam Kovalevskaia Awards has affirmed the position of women in terms of general contribution to Vietnam’s S&T. The Awards are objectives to strive for of many female scientists and collectives. For the coming time, female scientists should do something so that scientific research results can been applied more in the daily life to improve the efficiency of contributions of sciences to the country’s building and development cause.
