Industrial irradiation equipment provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been put into operation with the initial radio activity of 107kCi since 1991 in Hanoi Irradiation Center, Tu Liem district, Hanoi.

After nearly 20-year operation, the Irradiation Center has been successfully transferred technologies and recently irradiation technology has become integral one for the development of some production, processing and export fields, contributing to the social and economic development.

In order to efficiently explore available facilities of the Center, Vietnam Commission for Atomic Energy has developed and MOST has approved the Project on upgrading Hanoi Irradiation Center, which includes upgrading irradiation equipment and the Center’s infrastructure. In August 2006, the irradiation equipment has been upgraded, including replacing systems of control, transportation, loading and unloading irradiated goods and radio-activity control system.

IAEA has highly appreciated roles and effectiveness of the IAEA-funded project and agreed the funding for the project in the next stage. Being paid attention by MOST, Vietnam Commission for Atomic Energy – Hanoi Irradiation Center has developed technical assistance project VIE (Stage II) in order to efficiently and safely explore invested irradiation equipment by increasing the capacity of goods irradiation to meet irradiation demands for food preservation, sterilization of health articles and equipment for enterprises and promote research and use of radiation technology for research and development units in Northern region. The main contents of the IAEA- funded project is to provide 100kCi radioactivity source of cobalt 60 for irradiation equipment of the Center and train human resource for maintaining safe and efficient operation of IAEA-funded equipment.

From 29/6 to 5/7/2009, 100 kCi additional radioactivity resource (including 08 source bars of RSL2089) was transferred to the Center, installed and loaded completely and safely to the equipment.

On July 06, 2009, the irradiation equipment was in piloting operation, checked before acceptance and put into full operation with the total radioactivity of 99,08kCi, the irradiation capacity of the equipment has successfully completed.

The irradiation equipment of the Center is ready to meet irradiation demands at a large scale for enterprises in the Northern region.
